oh boat shoes

as a southern girl (who went to a southern college), I have an affinity for sperry boat shoes.  but most of them cover too much of my foot for me to really find them comfortable (since they’re supposed to be worn without socks).

which is why my sister just got the bluefish slip on pair I bought like 3 years ago and have worn only a handful of times.

(similar to these, but without the tassle nonsense)

image

but I saw this pair in dsw today and they don’t come up to high on my foot, plus I liked the metallic finish.

i still dont like wearing shoes without socks though, so i didnt get them.

but I’m considering them for wearing with khakis to work this summer, since my chaco thong sandals aren’t exactly “professional” (they are black leather at least!)

btw, for those of you still wearing rainbow sandals - the finish on my chacos is way better (ie my feet don’t turn black when it rains like they used to with my rainbows).  food for thought

best news I've had all day: Allegra goes OTC in 4 days

So, my doctor put me on allegra a year or two ago, along with flonase, for my allergies.  And its been awesome.  But, BCBS upped the cost in late 2010 to $60 a bottle.  And since November-February isn’t bad allergy time for me, I’ve been using other OTC meds.

image

A guy I went to elementary-high school with told me over Christmas that Allegra was going OTC in early 2011, so I’ve been on the look out for it in stores.

March 4 is the big day

An ode to Land's End Canvas Tote bags

Ok, not really an ode, because I’m not creative enough to make up a poem.  But, their tote bags are awesome.  Specifically the zip-top ones in fun colors!

image

I got myself one, matching the green one on the left in these pictures (Annie’s), in the summer of 2009 and have carried it most days since then.  It is only showing slight wearing around the corner seams on the bottom (where it takes the most abuse)

Obviously I also bought them for my bridesmaids.  Greens for Annie, Purples for Heather, Pink & Orange for Karen and Blues for Lydia.

(Apologies for the picture quality, it was a very bright morning)

image

Land’s End usually offers different color combos by season.  Fall & Winter have darker color combos.  The ones in the pictures above are Sprint & Summer colors.

They do also make them with natural canvas body and colored trim, but I think the natural colored fabric would show stains/dirt too easily.  But the spring colors are out already for those (all colors are not currently available in all sizes).

image

Note the bag I got and the ones I got my bridesmaids were medium sized.  Which makes for a large purse or small over night bag.  If you like smaller bags then go with the small.

I also got a large sized bag to be Keith and my pool/beach tote.  Its a little large for just the two of our pool/beach things, but the medium would have been far too small.

Coquette: ‘Prince Charming Disease’ is ruining your perfectly good relationship

Dear god I love this girl.

Dear Coquette,

I love my boyfriend in a very warm, comfortable and affectionate way. We are on almost the same page intellectually, and we never fight. Things are pretty much “no complaints” all around. On my end, though, it’s not really a passionate love and never has been. He’s the best guy I’ve ever dated, and I do love him, but there is a small part of me that still wants to hold out for at least a steamy love affair before settling down with the safe and comfortable guy (or just find a good guy who also presses my buttons). I’m happy and couldn’t bring myself to leave my guy, but I wonder if this desire for something more exciting will rear up one day and make a big pile of relationship-ruining drama. Should I interpret this feeling as a sign I should leave, even though I don’t want to right now? Or should I just roll with it and deal with it later, if it really becomes a bigger issue?

At moments like these, I want to drive up to Forest Lawn, find Walt Disney’s grave, dig up whatever part of him wasn’t cryogenically frozen, and bitch-slap him for infecting generations of American women with something I like to call “Prince Charming disease.”

This is a terrible affliction that causes grown-ass women to ruin perfectly good relationships by pining away for a nebulous cartoon fiction: passionate, steamy, “happily ever after” love.

“Snow White,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “Cinderella” are delicious fun when you’re a little girl, but fairy tales are lies we tell to children. The myth of Prince Charming has no business sneaking past the Tooth Fairy and worming its way into your romantic expectations. Do you still write letters to the North Pole? Didn’t think so — and yet you’re still waiting to be swept off your feet.

You are happy in a stable, healthy relationship built on mutual love and respect with a man whom you consider your intellectual and emotional equal. Girl, you and I should be high-fiving like drunken frat boys at a strip club. Instead, you’re writing me about the the best guy you’ve ever dated like he’s the winter of your discontent.

You want to hold out for a steamy love affair? You actually used the word “steamy”? Are you kidding? Sure, you could find a guy who bends you over the furniture, but fresh sexual chemistry is a temporary high, and it isn’t gonna scratch your itch.

Your real problem is that you haven’t plowed through enough guys to realize that they’re all pretty much the same, and so every time the music swells at the end of a chick flick, you think you’re missing out on something magical.

Sorry, babe. Nobody is waiting around the corner on a white horse.

If you weren’t emotionally, intellectually or physically satisfied, that would be another story — just not this one. You’re happy, and nothing is broken except your childlike set of unrealistic romantic expectations, which would be quaint if they weren’t so damaging to adult relationships like yours.

Heres where you can find more from her:

Add /rss to convert any Tumblr search or tag results URL into a feed

While playing around with the new Tumblr search feature, ianbroyles discovered you can add /rss to the end of any Tumblr search URL to change it into a RSS feed. So if you were only interested in subscribing to my posts about “photography”, the URL for the RSS feed would be http://junesix.org/search/photography/rss.

I noticed this also works for tag URLs. Luckily, I started going back and tagging my posts by keyword and post type a while back. Thus, the RSS feed for my posts tagged with “photo” would be http://junesix.org/tagged/photo/rss.

Thanks to ianbroyles for the discovery and to joelaz for starting the discussion that kicked it off.

Just in case anyone else wants to know this information, like I did.

On Abortion and "Respectful Disagreement" → greaterthanlapsed.tumblr.com

azspot:

greaterthanlapsed:

Even if all women had access to education, birth control, healthcare, and social programs, there would still be women who get pregnant and don’t want to be. There would still be ectopic pregnancies, failed sterilizations, severe fetal abnormalities, and women whose organs start failing as a result of pregnancy. There would still be women whose birth control fails and they find themselves pregnant 3 or 4 weeks later and they want to get rid of it because pregnancy is a hassle—it’s painful, exhausting, and requires many lifestyle changes, and it ends in labor and delivery, which are dangerous and sometimes traumatic.

Any way you look at it, at some point when you are talking about banning abortion you are advocating forced pregnancy and childbirth for women who don’t want to do it. And what do we call that use of women’s bodies against their will? Everyone all together now…. SLAVERY.

So, while it may not be very nice to say so, I don’t think it’s unreasonable for someone—especially someone with a uterus—to call that monstrous. No one can deny that a fetus is “human life.” However, a grown woman is a person, with ideas, opinions, desires, dreams, and plans for her future. She is autonomous, and a fetus is not. She should get to choose while, unfortunately (albeit necessarily), a fetus doesn’t get a say in the matter.

So, you know, maybe it is “name-calling” for someone to call the anti-abortion stance monstrous. Maybe it is disrespectful. But I sure as fuck don’t feel respected when my body is treated as public property, and I have no desire to have a thoughtful conversation about whether or not I should be a slave.

Stated well.

“

All societies have stories and myths that reinforce their fundamental values. In North American society, one of the most important values is romance. Romance is love as we imagine it, perfect love, not love as it actually plays out in reality. And this perfect love is so satisfying and exciting that most of us are convinced to enter into, and to try to sustain, life-long commitments. Romantic stories keep perfect love alive. and in so doing help to bring people into real world commitments.

But romantic stories aren’t necessarily the best resource for understanding how to make a life long commitment work. Once your partner exits your imagination and enters your life, he or she loses the perfection that is only possible in the world of the imagination. But our culture continues to tell us that real world love should be perfect love.

So here’s a Valentine’s Day message to everyone who is in a real, long term relationship: Romance is fun and playful, and maybe you can be successful in bringing romance into your relationship, but don’t fall for the myth that romance is the only real form of love. Real love isn’t enchantment, it is more like work. The good news is that it can be very rewarding work.
